Breaking the Taboos on Period Poverty

Period poverty is a reality for many girls and women around the world. It refers to the lack of access to menstrual hygiene products, safe and private sanitation facilities, and accurate information about menstrual health. Period poverty affects the physical, emotional, and mental health of those who experience it and can hinder their ability to participate in education, work, and social activities.

At Savvy, we believe that every person has the right to manage their menstrual health with dignity and confidence. That is why we are committed to providing affordable and sustainable menstrual hygiene products to help end period poverty.

The Impact of Period Poverty

Period poverty is a complex issue that affects millions of people worldwide. In developing countries, girls and women often have limited access to menstrual hygiene products and face cultural stigmas that prevent them from managing their periods effectively. As a result, they resort to using unhygienic materials like rags, leaves, and even mud to absorb menstrual blood, which can lead to infections and other health problems.

In developed countries, period poverty is often the result of economic barriers, where people cannot afford to buy menstrual hygiene products or have limited access to them. According to a study by Plan International, 1 in 10 girls have been unable to afford menstrual products, while 12% have had to improvise with things like socks, tissues, or newspapers.

The impact of period poverty goes beyond the physical discomfort of managing periods without proper products. It can lead to social isolation, low self-esteem, and even mental health problems. Girls and women who are unable to manage their periods with dignity and confidence may feel ashamed, embarrassed, or anxious, which can affect their ability to attend school, work, or participate in social activities.
